Globus MEDICUS - Federation of DICOM Medical Imaging Devices into Healthcare Grids
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard defines Radiology medical device interoperability and image data exchange between modalities, image databases - Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) - and image review end-points. However the scope of DICOM and PACS technology is currently limited to the trusted and static environment of the hospital. In order to meet the demand for ad-hoc tele-radiology and image guided medical procedures within the global healthcare enterprise, a new technology must provide mobility, security, flexible scale of operations, and rapid responsiveness for DICOM medical devices and subsequently medical image data. Grid technology, an informatics approach to securely federate independently operated computing, storage, and data management resources at the global scale over public networks, meets these core requirements. Here we present an approach to federate DICOM and PACS devices for large-scale medical image workflows within a global healthcare enterprise. The Globus MEDICUS (Medical Imaging and Computing for Unified Information Sharing) project uses the standards-based Globus Toolkit Grid infrastructure to vertically integrate a new service for DICOM devices - the DICOM Grid Interface Service (DGIS). This new service translates between DICOM and Grid operations and thus transparently extends DICOM to Globus based Grid infrastructure. This Grid image workflow paradigm has been designed to provide not only solutions for global image communication, but fault-tolerance and disaster recovery using Grid data replication technology. Actual use-case of 40 MEDICUS Grid connected international hospitals of the Childerns Oncology Group and the Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation and further clinical applications are discussed. Sharing medical imaging over the cloud services
Over the past decades, healthcare institutions adopted Picture Archive and Communication Systems in their workflows. The exchange and interaction between different equipment is performed with Digital Imaging Communication in Medicine (DICOM), which is a very extensive protocol covering many areas of the imaging laboratories. However, the communication of a wide domain composed by several medica...

The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) protocol is currently the ubiquitous standard for the communication of medical images and related data within the radiology department. However, seamless image distribution within the healthcare enterprise and especially with research and educational information systems is still hard to achieve, as software developers of such third-part...

ANOTHER REVOLUTION IS taking place in radiology. This revolution differs from the previous 2 decades in which digital computers began to dominate imaging. Although the 1980s and 1990s brought us computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed radiography, digital subtraction angiography, and softcopy viewing (filmless radiology), the emphasis today is on developing seamless communicat...

Medical imaging is increasing its importance in matters of medical diagnosis and in treatment support. Much is due to computers that have revolutionized medical imaging not only in acquisition process but also in the way it is visualized, stored, exchanged and managed. Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) is an example of how medical imaging takes advantage of computers. To solve ...
متن کاملDigital DICOM in Dentistry
Similar to Medicine, digital communication, information processing, and x-ray imaging have changed the face of dentistry. The incorporation of digital systems into medical and dental practice has necessitated development of a standard that allows reliable transmission of information between the devices taking the images, devices storing the images, and devices displaying the images. This standa...
